Dev Diary #3 – Early Access Server Update
We're closing the 33 Immortals' Early Access EU server and walk you down the reasons why, and what to expect in-game.
Hey everyone,
We want to let you know about a server change: on Wednesday October 1st, 11am EDT, the EU server for 33 Immortals will be closing temporarily and all players will be moving to the NA server.
We know this isn’t the news many of you were hoping for and we understand the concerns that can come with playing with a higher ping. The reality is that there’s a higher and more constant number of players on the NA server, and gathering everyone at the same place will make the experience better overall for everyone.
We can imagine this decision will come with many questions and we’re here to answer them. Here’s a quick FAQ to address your concerns:
Are you closing the server because the number of players is low?
Essentially, yes. 33 Immortals is by far our most ambitious project to date: it’s our first multiplayer game, one that requires 33 players at all times to jump together for every Inferno session. That makes the bar for a healthy population quite high. With that in mind, while the EU server is still active, the number of players is too low on average on this server to ensure an enjoyable experience throughout the day. By bringing everyone together on NA, we’ll have fuller lobbies and more opportunities to team up, improving everybody’s experience.
What are players using the EU server supposed to do, I don’t want a 100ms+ ping!
Given the type of game it is, 33 Immortals doesn’t heavily rely on a low ping to offer a good experience to players. Granted, if we were a competitive FPS that would be another story… but we’re not. That being said, we understand that a high ping can be frustrating. From a technical standpoint, the game already includes systems that help smooth things out:
- Lag compensation: the server takes everyone’s latency into account and synchronizes actions so that players experience the game at the same pace, reducing the impact of input delay.
- Input prediction: the tech we use can anticipate certain actions, making gameplay feel more responsive even if your ping is higher.
In our tests, pings in the 100–150ms range are still very playable and fun, and most players shouldn’t feel a major difference.
Do you have a plan to address the lobby population?
Yes, we are exploring options at the moment, including some that were suggested by the community. We’ll be trying things and will keep you updated! While we’re doing our best to address this, it’s also important to note that this is quite normal during Early Access: numbers go up after updates, then settle down after a while. It’s part of the cycle, and it’s also why your feedback during this stage is so important: it helps us keep improving the game and preparing a super solid launch down the line.
What will happen to the EU Call to Arms?
Call to Arms is a new feature that we know you enjoy and it will stay! We will make sure EU players can still participate by adding new time slots adapted to the EU timezones. The new schedule will be focused on Purgatorio with the following time slots:
- 8pm – 10pm EDT | 2am – 4am CEST
- 9pm – 11pm CEST | 3pm – 5pm EDT => Adapted to European timezones
Is the real reason behind closing the server that you’re progressively going to stop 33 Immortals development?
Nope, the 33 Immortals team is still working on the game full time and we’re dedicated to bringing it to 1.0 release in 2026! The development continues and we’re currently working on a major content update that will come out very soon.
So yes, the EU server is closing for now, but that doesn’t mean it’s gone forever. The good news is that by gathering everyone on the NA server, your multiplayer experience will be better, while maintaining performance at enjoyable standards. In parallel, we’ll keep an eye on where players are around the world and depending on the influx of players we see following major updates, we’ll revisit the number of servers.
And to finish on an even better news, our next update will drop in a few weeks and will introduce the new weapons we’ve been teasing for a while. We’ll be sharing more info as we get closer to the release date but we’ll give you a hint for now:
Pride and Temperance.
Thanks for sticking with us, and for being such a dedicated part of this community. We’ll keep listening, and we’ll keep working to make your time in the game as fun as it can be!
